The short answer

Tips can be reversed when a cardholder disputes a charge or a refund is processed through the payment network. There is usually no "refund" button on a tip page for recipients to click.

What you will see

History may mark the tip refunded, disputed, or charged back. Balances adjust when the processor finalizes the event.

If a guest contacts you

Ask them to check their bank or card app first. If they truly paid the wrong person, resolution goes through the processor — not an informal second payment that could be a scam.

Common misconceptions

  • Recipients cannot usually click “Refund” on a tip from their dashboard — reversals come through the card network or bank.

  • A reversed or disputed tip is not always a permanent loss — the outcome depends on the dispute process.
