How to print and display a tip QR so it scans

Size, contrast, and placement matter more than fancy design. A tip QR should scan quickly from arm’s length in normal lighting.

The short answer

Print large enough to scan from arm's length, with high contrast and a flat matte surface. Add one short line of copy so guests know it is safe to tip digitally.

Size

Roughly 1.5 inches (4 cm) square is a practical minimum for phone cameras at a counter. Larger is better for distance or dim rooms.

Lighting

Avoid glare on laminated signs. Matte finish or tent cards on nightstands outperform glossy lobby posters for housekeeping cards.

Copy example

"Scan to leave a thank-you — Apple Pay and cards welcome."

Common misconceptions

  • Oversized codes on glossy paper often fail scans because of glare — size and contrast matter more than decoration.

  • You do not need color or a logo inside the QR pattern; quiet zone and high contrast matter more.
