How do Apple Pay and Google Pay tipping work?

Wallet tipping uses the payment app already on a phone. When checkout supports it, guests can tip in a tap instead of typing a card number.

The short answer

When checkout supports digital wallets, the payer taps Apple Pay or Google Pay instead of typing a card number. That lowers friction — especially for small tips left on the spot.

How it works

The tip page sends the payer to secure checkout. If the phone and browser support wallets, those buttons appear automatically alongside card fields. You do not need a separate wallet integration beyond standard card processing.

When wallets may not appear

Desktop browsers, older phones, or in-app browsers (for example inside social apps) sometimes hide wallet buttons. Card entry should remain available as a fallback.

Why it matters

Wallet tipping feels similar to buying coffee with a phone — fast, familiar, and private. That familiarity often increases completion rates compared with long card forms.

Common misconceptions

  • Apple Pay does not require downloading another app if it is already configured on the device.

  • Google Pay works the same way — no separate tipping app when the wallet is already set up.

  • When wallet buttons do not appear, card entry is still available; wallets are optional, not required.
